Stopping to smell the roses.

Even in the most unlikely of circumstances, nature will find a way to not only survive but thrive.

I spent a morning walking through one of the most beautiful of villages in southern France, Camon. It is known here for it’s roses. They grow outside homes with no particular protection or special feed, they just seem to spring up from the sidewalk and rubble. And they just don’t grow, they flourish. The roses bring an incredible beauty to a rustic backdrop and they make everything around them beautiful too. I couldn’t help but think about people who I have known who also shared a similar experience. Those who, despite their upbringing and sad start in life, defeated the odds and went on to success, regardless of how you measure that word.

How many of us hold onto that identity we created of ourselves to stay safe or comfortable? And where did we get that sense of who we are? Do we blame others for our circumstances, our looks, our finances, our status? And if we do, then why? Why is it easier to look outside the problem than within? Because it takes accountability, strength and resilience to look at yourself and decide you can be whoever or whatever you want. Once you have done that, there is work to do. Making that decision come to life.

I noticed this one particular rose bush today. It is growing in a small hollow of rubble on a stone step against the wall. Not only have people brushed past it over the years going in and out of the house, they probably stepped on it too. I don’t believe any special attention was given to the rose bush. But just look how those roots held and the branches spread out, each limb giving life to scores of blossoms. Each blossom providing a perfume and elegance. The overall effect is stunning. One lowly plant on the pathway of others has found a way to survive, to thrive and does so with style.

What is it that you need to overcome? Don’t let your present or past circumstances dictate your future. With grace, and determination – you can and will achieve. Believe me, I know.

When you start your journey

What do you carry with you when you set off in a new direction?

Do you carry the baggage that you just left behind or do you unburden yourself and enjoy the freedom and the excitement of a new opportunity?

I have to be honest, and say, for me, the feeling of escape and opportunity is my adrenaline. Ever since I was a young child, I would find new paths to explore, a different route home from school, a country path that I hadn’t tried before. The unpredictable is something I have come to love whereas, the comfort of routine and safety has taken me down some very deep, dark paths in my mind. Boredom is a killer. I have always felt that it takes away your creativity and places you in your own personal straight-jacket.

In recent years my forested property has become my sanctuary. The safety of not knowing what lies ahead, what animal was on the trail before me or the separation of the “noise” of the everyday is what grounds me. I know I can’t be the only one to feel this way. I am not an adrenaline-junkie. I don’t go out of my way to be different, but I do know I am original. And that is a reason to celebrate.

So for those individuals of similar minds, the women who finding themselves at a point where life is becoming too “small” or they feel stuck, I have offered my personal sanctuary as a retreat amongst the woods.

My experience as a mediator has placed me in the midst of others conflict. A cool head allows me to be in the midst of the turmoil without it being my personal problem. Careful listening and questioning helps parties to find a path forward. They all have baggage. Finding a way to work through it without bringing it back into the present, is a skill.

I am not sure how this new venture will be received. Not even sure who will choose to join me. Not sure what their need is. I just know that I am ready to take that first step into the unknown and help others with their journey. Taking the opportunity to finding out Your Life, Unleashed. Are you coming?
